Welcome to our home in the Green Mountains of Vermont. A home we have been making oodles of home improvements on over this past winter. It started with this interior open-floor plan painting project, and then it was this 4 season sunroom makeover.

Now we are onto these 3 wallpaper bedroom designs, which include our master bedroom and 2 guest bedrooms with a bathroom suite.

What are the best cozy bedroom ideas?

My entire aspiration was to transform our bedrooms into Vermont B&B or Inn-style bedrooms by brightening the trim with Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace white and layering the walls with an old-fashioned wallpaper vibe.

What is a Vermont Inn-style bedroom?

Well, actually, I made it up…

But I think it should be an official interior design style, right?

To me, it means old-fashioned, cozy, and quaint, with time-honored wallpaper, antique beds, luxurious blankets and pillows, squeaky wood floors, and vintage accents all around.

The smell of blueberry muffins, local Vermont maple syrup, and coffee brewing in the morning.

There is snow falling outside, and the sounds of a snow plow clearing the roads for the skiers to make it up to the mountains.

Where to Begin?

I want first to acknowledge that I have never ever had a room with wallpaper before, though I have longed for it for years. I was forever being talked out of it;

• “Wallpaper rooms make it difficult to sell a home.
• Wallpaper is a massive project.
• Removal is disastrous.
• It’s outdated and not in style”, etc…

But I love it, every single bit of it, so it’s finally going in!

How do I choose the best bedroom wallpaper?

I am pleased to be partnering with my friends over at Wallpaper Direct for this lovely and intimate 3 wallpaper bedroom design project; we are so grateful for the gifted wallpaper. Wallpaper Direct has a fabulous assortment of wallpaper. You can request a free sample before committing to your online choice, too.

This is truly the most challenging part, as there are so many wallpaper styles and colors to choose from. I hung my Wallpaper Direct sample options up throughout the various bedrooms and then made my selections.

Which wallpaper is the best for the bedroom?

This depends upon your own style and tastes.

For my bedrooms, I was looking for an old-fashioned Vermont Inn effect. For a bedroom, personally, I prefer a light and airy wallpaper style versus a darker wallpaper selection.

Look at your outdoor environment, too, and try to incorporate some of nature’s colors into your wallpaper selections.

Take into consideration how the wallpaper will work with your existing bedroom furniture.

I chose each of these wallpaper patterns based on the room’s lighting, room size, furniture, and ambiance.

My Wallpaper Bedroom Choices

Master Bedroom with Canopy Bed

The first bedroom to be wallpapered was to be our master bedroom, where I chose the Floral Rococo Red from Wallpaper Direct. I liked the softness and variety of colors offered in this wallpaper design. The wallpaper colors are also coordinated with the Wedgewood Gray paint color that accents the built-in bookshelves in the attached sunroom.

Our wallpaper guy, Peter, measured and provided us with the amount of wallpaper we would need to order for each bedroom. This average-sized bedroom required 8 rolls of wallpaper with a little left over.

Master Bedroom Before

This is a medium-sized bedroom with French doors looking out over the mountains. It has lots of windows and a large mirrored closet that breaks up the walls. Matched with this spindle canopy bed, I felt this room could handle the bolder Floral Rococo Red wallpaper pattern.

Day 1

Our Wallpaper guy, Peter, prepped the master bedroom by sanding and priming the walls with tinted primer to match the wallpaper. This ensured that nothing showed through the wallpaper itself, making for a very finished look.

It took about four days to sand, prime, and wallpaper this master bedroom.

This wallpaper design completely changed the look and feel of our master bedroom. It’s so charming, and the wallpaper added so much depth to the room that it actually appears so much larger than it genuinely is.

I’m delighted to add this soft vintage-style soft blue rug, which pulls from the blues in the wallpaper. And I’ve ordered this antique lace canopy in white like the ones presented above on The Grafton Inn’s canopy beds.

I was also very impressed with the details of the wallpaper’s installation.

Each light switch and electric outlet matched the wallpaper’s pattern beautifully.

Guest Bedroom with Antique Four Post Bed

This guest bedroom is the larger of our two guest bedrooms. It has French doors that open to the home’s front porch, which has stunning mountain views. It’s where our adult guests stay when they visit us in Vermont.

The antique four-post bed was a gift from my parents when we bought this home. A bed that they had used themselves at their home in Maine.

And I want to make this antique bed the highlight of this guest bedroom.

I wanted this bedroom to be soft, light, airy, and inviting. Therefore, I chose this blue and white Flora wallpaper pattern, gifted to us by Wallpaper Direct. This room required seven rolls of wallpaper.

The guest bedrooms are part of a two-bedroom suite, including a bathroom and a hallway. The bathroom is painted with Benjamin Moore’s Stardew Blue and Chantilly Lace white, and the connecting hallway, along with the trim in both bedrooms, is also Chantilly Lace white. Therefore, I wanted the wallpaper selections to flow nicely with these colors.

Each room was again sanded and painted with a tinted primer to match the bedroom’s wallpaper.

A Work in Progress

This more oversized guest bedroom took about 3 days to prep and wallpaper.

Just in time for Steve’s sister to visit us for the weekend.

I found this wallpaper and bedroom a bit challenging to photograph, honestly, so I’m providing a close-up of the beautiful Flora wallpaper alongside the full room shot. The real blue and white coloring gets lost in the full room shot, unfortunately. I’ll work on this and hopefully have it all mastered for my next post!

Small Guest Bedroom

This small guest bedroom with walls all sanded and prepped is just big enough for a queen-sized bed and side table.

Prepped and Ready to Wallpaper

Why a sled and cushions? Well, we had just been hit with an early spring Nor’easter, and some of our outdoor porch furniture landed here while I was taking the before photos… Forever embracing the chaos…

I wanted the wallpaper in this small bedroom to accentuate the room’s size while making it feel like you were staying in a cozy country cottage. I chose Karins in Sky Blue, which Wallpaper Direct gifted us.

Small Guest Bedroom At This Moment in Time

This small guest bedroom required 6 rolls of wallpaper. And it may have just actually been the most transformable of spaces.
