Antique Crockery

What is antique crockery?

Antique crockery refers to old and collectible ceramic or pottery dishes, bowls, and containers that were made in the past. These items are often sought after for their historical significance, craftsmanship, and unique designs. Antique crockery can include various types of tableware, such as plates, cups, saucers, and serving dishes, as well as storage containers like jars and crocks. Collectors appreciate antique crockery for its aesthetic appeal and the glimpse it provides into the cultural and artistic traditions of bygone eras.

Antique Crockery Jug

For today’s flower arrangement, I’m going to use what I consider to be an antique crockery jug.

Antique crockery jugs, often made of durable stoneware or earthenware, were popularly used for various purposes throughout history. They were commonly employed for storing and serving liquids such as water, milk, or even alcoholic beverages. What sets antique crockery jugs apart is their distinctive designs and intricate details. From hand-painted motifs to intricate handles and spouts, each jug tells a story of craftsmanship and creativity. Collectors are drawn to these jugs not only for their functionality but also for their historical value and the nostalgia they evoke.

Here are a few examples of different types of antique crockery jugs:

It’s a beautiful summer day in Vermont, and with that, I decided to put together a bouquet of flowers and antique crockery that was once my mother’s for our newly designed sitting room.

Flowers

White Carnations & Hosta Leaves

To begin with, I went to the local supermarket to see what they had on hand for flowers. Not much, I’m afraid! So, I began with some white carnations.

I started with this antique crock and a glass jar that would hold the water and flowers inside of the antique crockery, along with some Hosta leaves.  Did you know that Hosta leaves are great fillers for bouquets, and they last quite a long time, too!

Hostas are perennial plants that are commonly grown for their attractive foliage. They are known for their large, textured leaves that come in a variety of colors and patterns. Hostas are shade-tolerant plants that are often used as ornamental plants in gardens and landscaping.

I filled the glass jar with water and placed it inside the antique crock.  This will be the base for the flowers.

Next, I cut the carnations to sit in the water, leaving a little gap from the edge of the vintage crock so that I could fill the gap with the hosta leaves from the backyard.

I picked a variety of Hosta leaves from the backyard and started filling the gaps in the antique crock.
