Decorating with Flea Market Frames

Vintage Gold Frames

Vintage gold frames can add a fabulous, elegant, and timeless texture with layers to walls in home decor design. Here are a few ways to find vintage gold frames:

  • Antique Shops: Visit local antique shops or vintage stores that specialize in selling antique and vintage items. These shops often have a selection of vintage gold frames, including various styles and sizes.
  • Estate Sales and Auctions: Keep an eye out for estate sales or auctions in your area. These events can be a great opportunity to find unique vintage gold frames at competitive prices. Estate sales often have a wide range of items, including artwork and home decor, which may include frames.
  • Online Marketplaces: Explore online marketplaces like eBay and Etsy, which offer a wide range of vintage and antique items, including gold frames. Use specific search terms like “vintage gold frames” or “antique gold frames” to narrow down the results.
  • Thrift Stores and Flea Markets: Check out thrift stores and flea markets in your area. While the selection may vary, you might come across vintage gold frames at affordable prices. Be prepared to spend some time searching through different stalls or sections to find what you’re looking for.
  • Online Antique Stores: Many antique dealers have online stores where they sell a variety of antique and vintage items, including gold frames. Look for reputable online antique stores that specialize in frames or artwork. These stores often provide detailed descriptions and photographs, making it easier to find the perfect vintage gold frame.
  • Local Art Supply Stores: Some art supply stores carry a selection of vintage-inspired or reproduction gold frames. While these may not be authentic vintage frames, they can still offer a similar aesthetic and be a more accessible option.
  • Thrift Stores and Garage Sales: Keep an eye out for thrift stores, consignment shops, or garage sales in your area. While the selection may vary, you might stumble upon affordable gold frames that can be repurposed for your walls. Don’t forget to check the condition and size of the frames before purchasing.

When searching for vintage gold frames, consider the size and style that will complement your interior design decor.

I enjoy collecting gold frames in all different sizes and shapes, which is key for this wall layering project over our vintage mantel in the dining room.

Gold Frames for Walls

Layering gold frames on walls can create visually interesting and dynamic displays.

  • Choose a Variety of Frame Sizes: Select frames in different sizes to add depth and dimension to your wall. Mix and match small, medium, and large frames to create a balanced composition. This variation in size will create visual interest and make the display more dynamic.
  • Consider Frame Shapes: Experiment with different frame shapes, such as rectangular, square, oval, or even ornate designs. This will add variety and create a more visually appealing arrangement. Play around with different shapes to find a combination that works well together.
  • Create a Layout: Before hanging the frames, lay them out on the floor or a large table to experiment with different arrangements. Try different configurations until you find a layout that you like. Consider the spacing between frames and the overall balance of the display. Learn and see more in this Vintage Blue and White Platter Wall Design post.
  • Use a Level: When hanging the frames, use a level to ensure they are straight. This is particularly important when layering frames, as it can be visually distracting if they are not aligned properly. Take your time to ensure each frame is level and positioned correctly.
  • Overlapping Frames: To create a layered effect, consider overlapping frames. You can do this by hanging smaller frames in front of larger ones or by positioning frames at different depths using spacers. Overlapping frames add depth and dimension to the display.
  • Vary the Artwork: Mix and match different types of artwork or photographs within the frames. Consider combining family photos, art prints, or even decorative objects like mirrors or small shelves. This will add visual interest and make the layered display more engaging.
  • Consider the Wall Color: When selecting gold frames, consider the color of the wall. Gold frames tend to stand out more on neutral or darker-colored walls. Consider the overall color scheme of the room and choose frames that will complement the wall color.
  • Balance and Symmetry: While layering frames allows for creativity and variation, it’s important to maintain balance and symmetry in the overall arrangement. Step back and assess the display as you go, making adjustments as needed to ensure a visually pleasing composition.

Layering gold frames on walls is a personal and creative process. Don’t be afraid to experiment and make adjustments until you achieve a display that you love.

Gold Frames with bottles on wall display over mantel

Gold Frames and Vintage Bottles

For this layered wall decor project, I’m sticking with all gold frames. However, I added a mixture of shades and patina that helped add texture to the wall’s layering.

I also enjoy collecting soft blue antique bottles, which I’m trying to use more of throughout our home decor. That’s when I came up with this idea of framing the vintage bottles over the faux mantel in our dining room.

Four vintage blue-gold pictures were already framed over this old mantel wall space, which I wanted to accentuate and complement.

To hang the bottles, I wrapped the bottleneck with a fishing line and hung them easily with a simple thumbtack at the top side of each open gold frame.

I also added some small vintage mirrors and vintage brass candlesticks that I had collected along the way. Layering different pieces is so fun and can be changed up so often to create a unique and fresh look.

I also added two larger glass blue bottles to the mantel that I found at the Christmas Tree Shops and decided to add one rustic wood frame to the gold frames wall mix.

I added even more texture to this gold frames wall display by placing these vintage blue shutters on each side of the mantel.

This was really an easy layering process, and I just love the bottles framed within each frame. It’s so different and accentuates the blue bottles that I love collecting.
