What are vintage pop-ups?

A vintage pop-up market is a weekend event at Sage Farm Antiques held from 10-4 Friday through Sunday. Twenty-four antique dealers sell their extensive collections of vintage furniture, gardening, and home decor collectibles for vintage enthusiasts to preview and shop.

Porch and Patios’ Vintage Pop-Up

Last weekend, I attended Sage Farm Antiques’ themed Porch and Patio vintage pop-up to share their fresh product with you today for our monthly Thrifting with the Gals series.

The Drive to New Hampshire

This early July morning in Maine started out rainy and heated up quickly with stifling humidity. Just coming off the Fourth of July holiday, my girlfriend and I headed to North Hampton, NH, for some antiquing and lunch.

The early morning Saturday traffic going south on I95 was heavy but manageable. But later that morning, upon our return to Maine, it was heavy, and I95 southbound was a parking lot as summer tourists transitioned during the busiest vacation time of the year here on the seacoast.

Vintage Enthusiasts

Sage Farm Antiques has many vintage enthusiasts shopping; however, from my experience, it’s always a manageable crowd.

I’ve never had to wait too long to check out, and plenty of accommodating staff are available both inside and outside to assist you, collect your items, and create vintage haul piles for your easy shopping experience.

The resident Bernese Mountain Dogs, Truman and Webster, are part of the Sage Farm family and will be there to greet you upon your arrival.

Needless to say, this is one of our Berner Ella’s favorite antique stops, too.

Nautical Signal Flag

Upon entering, my friend Lisa immediately spied on this vintage naval signal flag.

The International Code of Signals defines the “P” flag, also known as the “Papa” flag, as a blue flag with a white square in the middle. In nautical contexts, the “Papa” flag means “All persons should report on board; the vessel is about to proceed to sea.” It signals the crew to return to the ship in preparation for departure.

Lisa remembered a similar nautical signal flag that our friend Molly in Maine displayed and that she had admired on her coastal Maine home’s fireplace during the summer months, which you may see more of in this After the Homeworthy Shoot | My Home All Prepped and Primped post.

The nice part about finding this vintage signal flag is that Lisa and her husband are avid sailors.

At Lisa’s home in Coastal Maine, she now displays this vintage signal flag at her front door as a welcome. Don’t you just love the position of the metal figurine with binoculars paired with the flag?

The One That Got Away at Sage Farm Antiques

The next day, as we chatted about this fabulous nautical flag and its significance, we reflected on these two red wooden chairs we let get away. They would have looked fantastic paired with the nautical Papa signal flag at my friend’s home entry.

Don’t you hate when that happens?

Coastal Blue and White

I picked up blue and white lighthouse napkin rings and a Delft wine coaster from one of the Sage Farm Antiques artist offerings to use on our table settings at our home in Maine.

Vintage Owls at Sage Farm Antiques

Owls are versatile design elements that complement various styles, from rustic and woodland themes to more modern and eclectic interiors like ours. Their presence in home decor can add a touch of nature and whimsy.

Hoo Hoo

Next, I purchased a couple of small vintage owl pitchers for $10 each to pair with the vintage owl prints I discovered at Vintage Market Days Vermont this past spring. How cute will these be in the fall with foraged bouquets? See more in this Vintage Marketplace: Infinite Unique Decor post.

You may find more inspiration with these owl prints in this Plant Decor in Living Room Book Nook post.

Due to their keen vision and silent flight, owls are often seen as symbols of wisdom, knowledge, and intelligence. They are also associated with mystery and the unknown, as they are nocturnal creatures capable of seeing in the dark. In various cultures, owls can represent protection and vigilance, acting as guardians against evil spirits or bringing good luck.

Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Sundaes

Old-fashioned ice cream sundaes are classic desserts traditionally served in tall, fluted glass dishes. They are made by layering scoops of rich, creamy ice cream with various toppings, such as hot fudge, caramel sauce, fresh fruit, nuts, and whipped cream.

A maraschino cherry on top often completes the presentation. Ice cream sundaes, which originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, became a staple in soda fountains and ice cream parlors and evoke the nostalgia and simplicity of summers gone by.

Today at Sage Farm Antiques, this tradition was on full display—I would even say it was trending. There was vintage glassware, fountain soda straws in candy counter jars, antique ice cream scoops, spinning trays, ice cream topper containers, ice cream counter menus, and more.

An old-fashioned ice cream sundae collection like this would be so fun to set up on a summer porch or patio for children to enjoy. Heck, I would even love it, too…

I can’t mention ice cream sundaes without including my favorite Stonewall Kitchen’s Bittersweet Chocolate Sauce. As a bridesmaid years ago, I even gifted it to all the guests at a bridal shower, it’s that delicious!

And top off your ice cream sundaes with Bada Bing Cherries, their number one seller, which are out of this world delicious.

Ironstone Soda Fountain Syrup Dispensers

Do you love white ironstone platters? Wait until you see what I found…

The above led me to discover these two vintage ironstone soda fountain syrup dispensers on Etsy. Did you know that they made old-fashioned soda fountain syrup dispensers in Ironstone?

Two Vintage Hall Ironstone Ice Cream Sunday Syrup Dispensers.

Hall Ironstone syrup dispensers

HALL, known for its quality craftsmanship, produced vintage ice cream sundae syrup dispensers made from ironstone, a durable type of ceramic. These dispensers, often seen in classic soda fountains and ice cream parlors, were designed to hold and dispense various syrups like chocolate, caramel, and strawberry, adding a touch of elegance to the sundae-making experience.

The ironstone material ensured longevity and resistance to chipping, making them a practical choice for busy establishments. Today, these HALL vintage syrup dispensers are cherished collectibles admired for their historical significance and nostalgic charm, adding a vintage flair to modern kitchens and dining rooms.

A Crown Fit For a Princess

The great New England craft & artisan vendors at Sage Farm Antiques are talented and creative. Just look at these handmade crowns fit for a princess. Although I didn’t purchase one, they would be darling in a little girl’s room or even for a child’s birthday gift.

Gardening at Sage Farm Antiques

Vintage garden tools are always a summer favorite. And there was plenty to be had. From vintage flag stakes to rustic garden stakes, and beyond Sage Farm Antiques had them all.

Retro-Inspired at Sage Farm Antiques

This purchase took some coercion, but in the end, my girlfriend, Lisa, bought this set of 8 sailboat retro-inspired glassware.

Lisa is a fan of mid-century modern decor. She has two aqua-blue chairs in a sitting area, and I was convinced this glassware set would perfectly match her home decor style.

  1. Thanks for sharing this – I would love to attend these events at Sage Farm, but don’t live in New England. My suggestion is to post MORE photos of items at this event, not just of the items you bought, but all the great things there. It would be wonderful to have that ‘eye candy’ for those of us who subscribe to your blog, but cannot go these places ourselves.
One small note, Delft is not German, Delft is a town in the Netherlands and the maritime motifs are because they are a seafaring country being on the north Sea and of course all the canals and waterways. I have lived in Europe and visited both Germany and the Netherlands many times….

    1. Hi Kendra, thanks so much for your suggestions and I agree with you. I truly try and post lots of eye candy from these events for inspiration, as that’s where I get a great deal of my inspiration from too. And then I try to pair it with what I have purchased and how I decorated with it. So many are more interested in the finds as those that are interested in what is for sale. I’ll do my best to share both, promise! I was aware that the Delft is from the Netherlands, and explained that in the referred post. But they were stamped Germany on the bottom. So I think it made it confusing. I just love all the Delft and hope to get there to visit some day. Best to you and thanks for following along!

I’ve never heard of the ironstone ice cream parlor dispensers; good to know! Yikes…$28 for an old garden tool? Think I could be a millionaire if I sold my stuff out there! So fun to get the shop tour and get glimpses of your day:) Yes-those glasses were perfect for her home!

  3. Rachel Harper says:

This spot looks amazing. I hope have time to visit next September.

    1. Put it on your list for when you stay in Portsmouth. As long as they are open. They are only open for pop-up events…
