Thrifting with the Gals

It’s the third Thursday of the month, and that means it’s time for Thrifting with the Gals. The time when the gals and I all get together to share our favorite monthly thrifted finds with you, along with a few tips and tricks in vintage home decorating.

We are excited to welcome our guest host, Cindy of County Road 407, back with us this month. Today, Cindy is sharing about what you find thrifting and antiquing far from home, which I know you are going to love!

Green Mountains Glory: Autumn’s Peak Colors

Nestled in the heart of Vermont, our home offers a front-row seat to the breathtaking landscape of colors that the Green Mountains ignite each fall. Welcome to Vermont’s fall foliage peak season from our doorstep to yours.

I love to decorate our home with the hues of the fall foliage season, drawing inspiration from the vibrant colors of the mountain ranges. It’s the best time to fill our spaces with autumn season warmth, reflecting the splendor of nature’s display at its peak.

Whether hiking with our Bernese Mountain Dog, Ella, at Stratton Mountain snow-making pond foraging for colorful bouquets, a simple walk around our backyard, or visiting the local nursery, nature’s fall colors always inspire our home’s interior and exterior decorating.

Pink Accents

This year, I accented our sunroom, which doubles as a craft room, with new custom-made pink window seat cushions made by ZIPCushions. They’re affordable and come in many pattern options and designs.

Pink is a soft color that works fantastic with burgundies, plums, taupes, yellows, olive green, mustard, and rust orange—all autumn colors. And these cushions really cozied up to this stunning Vermont fall foliage view.

Road Trip to Vintage Market Days Vermont

One of my favorite antique markets to attend in the fall and in the spring is Vintage Market Days Vermont. I invited my friend Bernadette of B Home with Bernadette to join me for some Thrifting with the Gals.

The scenic route to Vintage Market Days in Vermont is a dream for leaf peepers, with each curve revealing brilliant shades of autumn. Along the way, we stopped at an idyllic covered bridge and enjoyed a maple creemee, adding a sweet treat to our picturesque road trip.

What is a Vermont Maple Creemee?

Trendy in Vermont, a maple creemee is a specialty soft-serve ice cream. It’s a creamy, smooth treat made from dairy with a unique flavor from real Vermont maple syrup. The word “creemee” is regional to Vermont and some parts of New England and typically refers to soft-serve ice cream, often characterized by its rich, creamy texture. Maple creemees are especially beloved in the fall when maple syrup’s flavors pair perfectly with the seasonal focus on maple products.

As I have bragged about here on the blog many times, Vintage Market Days Vermont truly is a beautiful shopping experience.

Nestled in the Green Mountains and held at the Rutland Vermont state fairground twice a year, you will find easy and close-by parking, covered shopping spaces keeping you safe from inclement weather, and minimal crowds compared to other prominent New England vintage markets.

You can anticipate spending two to three fun hours browsing the two barns, home to all the vintage and antique home decor vendors. You’ll also find a few arts and crafts and thrifted clothing vendors, too.

Vintage Decor Finds

Transferware

All the brown and white antique transferware displayed at the first vendor booth, which had fabulous prices, was a hit for us both. Bernadette bought a tureen, and I bought a platter. Transferware is a cozy vintage decor detail for decorating cabinets and tables during the Vermont fall foliage season.

Vintage Framed Owls

Flipping through these fabulous vintage framed owl prints last year, I began my first collection of vintage owls. I added two more small prints to my collection from this year’s market to hang on the wall in our Plant Decor in Living Room Book Nook.

Owl Pitchers

Creative Fall Details

One of my favorite Vintage Market Days antique vendors displayed some fabulous creative decor ideas, all of which could be easily replicated at home.

Transferware Soap Dish

How about using a small transferware plate with a bar of soap wrapped with a velvet ribbon? This is a super cute idea for displaying in a kitchen or bathroom during the Vermont fall foliage season right into the holidays.

Feathers and Succulents

Feathers are back, and so are succulents! Fill a vintage trinket like green glass, an old door knob, or a silver bowl with feathers or succulents. Display them on a bookshelf, dresser, cabinet, or coffee table this fall foliage season.

Vintage Suitcases

Vintage suitcases have always been favorites; look at this stack of retro green suitcases. These would be fabulous for a mid-century modern decor style in a bedroom corner, craft space, or corner nook. Check out the two I found last year at this same market in this Vintage Marketplace: Infinite Unique Decor post.

French Basket

My favorite find of the day was this antique French basket. I loved its shape and size. The back is flat, making it easy to hang on a wall for a display filled with fall hydrangeas or evergreens over Christmas.

The wheels worked brilliantly, and I used the basket to carry my finds throughout the market. I received so many compliments on my new found basket as we browsed around.

So it’s not just pretty; it will also be practical to bring when I go antiquing.

Wicker Lemonade Set

I have always admired vintage lemonade sets. They’re so fun to display on the porch or around the fire pit during the summer.

This wicker one was so unique that I’m now excited to display it on our new antique beverage cart that I picked up on my recent trip antiquing in Paris. See more in this Antiquing in Paris & Flea Market Shopping with the Gals post.

Set in a picturesque village, this event pairs the exploration of fabulous vintage finds with outdoor activities, making it one of the only places for such a delightful autumn escape.

Vermont Fall Foliage

Peak Foliage

Traditionally, peak foliage in Vermont falls on or around Columbus Day Weekend. This weekend was no different. The colors were and still are so vibrant this year. Last year was a bit of a bust…

As the Vermont fall foliage peaks, so does our weather. Stratton Mountain, a local ski area, just received its first overnight dusting of snow.

Harpoon Oktoberfest

These cool nights have us scrambling for the last of our RV antiquing road trips, too, as we must winterize our RV for the winter months as soon as the temperatures hit freezing.

So we headed north to Windsor, Vermont, for one of our last RV trips of the season. We wanted to visit Harpoon Brewery’s festivities at their annual Oktoberfest.

Harpoon Brewery’s Oktoberfest in Windsor, Vermont, is a must-visit event during this time of year. Located just a short drive from southern Vermont, it offers attendees a taste of delicious brews and the opportunity to enjoy scenic drives amid the region’s stunning autumn landscapes.

We have coined this Oktoberfest, the gathering of giant breed dogs. Super pet friendly, Harpoon’s Oktoberfest attracts many large breed dogs. There were Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands, Berners like Ella, and Mastiffs alike—a dog’s haven for fun and interaction.

Vermont Fall Foliage Season

Winter will be upon us shortly here in Vermont. But for now, we are immersing ourselves in the beautiful Vermont fall foliage, which has peaked and is genuinely a spectacular fall foliage season.

Cider donuts, pumpkins, Vermont Maple Creemees, apples, and afternoon rain showers followed by rainbows—it’s like heaven on earth.

Happy thrifting and antiquing, friend!
